KT&G Pairs Record Quarter With KRW 5 Trillion Payout Promise
KT&G posts record quarterly revenue of KRW 1.9052 trillion and unveils a KRW 5 trillion shareholder return plan through 2030, with a 33.3% dividend increase for 2026.

KRW 5 trillion is the sum KT&G has promised to hand back to shareholders between 2027 and 2030, a figure announced on November 5 alongside record third-quarter results. The Seoul-listed tobacco and health foods group reported quarterly revenue of KRW 1.9052 trillion, up 4.3% year over year, and operating profit of KRW 530.1 billion, up 13.9%. Both were all-time quarterly highs, which presumably made the generosity easier to announce.
The cigarette division did the heavy lifting. It posted record quarterly revenue of KRW 1.3065 trillion, up 6.0%, and operating profit of KRW 425.5 billion, up 14.4%, according to the company's earnings presentation. Its operating margin (operating profit as a share of revenue) reached 32.6%, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the third quarter of last year.
The global cigarette business notched its tenth consecutive quarter of simultaneous growth in sales volume, revenue and operating profit, breaking quarterly records for both volume and revenue. The Next Generation Products (NGP) unit, which holds the No. 1 market share in Korea, supported profitability through an improved price mix on NGP sticks.
KGC, KT&G's health functional foods subsidiary, contributed revenue of KRW 372.2 billion, up 3.4%, and operating profit of KRW 80.1 billion, up 12.2%.
What does the shareholder return plan contain?
President and CEO Bang Kyung-man presented the plan at the company's Capital Markets Day. The annual dividend for 2026 will rise to KRW 8,000 per share, an increase of KRW 2,000, or 33.3%, from the previous year. The dividend payout ratio (dividends as a proportion of net income) will climb from roughly 60% today to at least 75% by 2030.
The package breaks down as follows:
- KRW 1.2 trillion in share repurchases and cancellations over the next four years
- Dividends bringing the total shareholder return to KRW 5 trillion
- Possible additional special return schemes, should the company judge further measures warranted
The chief executive framed the logic plainly. "By strengthening our three growth pillars—global cigarettes, NGP and health functional foods—and expanding their global reach, we will deliver growth centered on profitability, going beyond simple revenue growth," the KT&G CEO said. "Building on sustained earnings growth, we will enhance shareholder value through shareholder returns on par with the top-level schemes in the global market."
Where does the growth come from?
KT&G expects full-year 2026 group revenue of KRW 7 trillion and operating profit of KRW 1.5 trillion. In the global cigarette business, it plans strategic price increases and a larger share of premium products in the mix, leaning on key brands such as ESSE. It also intends to raise volumes by entering 30 countries where it does not yet operate.
Local subsidiaries will take over more operations to tighten control over pricing and product strategy. A global production network optimization, including a new Indonesian factory completed in October 2026, should yield cumulative cost savings of more than KRW 550 billion over four years.
In NGP, the company will build direct operations in local markets for its heat-not-burn (HNB) products while keeping its existing global partnership. It plans to expand into roughly 70 countries by 2030 with LOOP, the nicotine pouch brand of Swedish company ASF, which KT&G acquired late last year. The list includes the United States, the world's largest nicotine pouch market.
KGC will expand its red ginseng ingredient business alongside its established JungKwanJang products, and is in discussions with global food, beverage and beauty companies over technology partnerships and product development.
What are the 2030 targets?
The company has set three ratios for the end of the decade:
- Global revenue at 70% or more of cigarette business revenue
- NGP revenue at 30% or more of cigarette business revenue
- Global revenue at 30% or more of health functional foods revenue
A tobacco company promising record payouts while planning entry into 30 new cigarette markets is nothing if not consistent. Whether top-tier global shareholder returns and a 75% payout ratio coexist comfortably with that expansion is a question for the 2030 accounts.
