HNI Corporation (NYSE: HNI) posted third-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.59 billion, missing Wall Street's consensus estimate of $1.60 billion by 0.6%, even as sales grew 133% year on year. Adjusted EPS of $1.62 beat the $1.39 consensus by 16.5%. Shares rose 1.4% to $50.45 immediately after the report.

The workplace furnishings manufacturer, with a market capitalization of $3.59 billion, paired the earnings beat with two margin figures that should temper enthusiasm. Operating margin came in at 8.6%, down from 10.8% in the same quarter last year. Free cash flow margin fell to 10.6% from 19.9%.

What drove the quarter?

Chief executive Jeff Lorenger attributed the result to execution under pressure. "The strength of our growth strategies and ability to stay focused on our profit levers, despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty, was evident in our third quarter results," Lorenger, who serves as chairman, president and CEO, said. "We expect strong profit growth again in the fourth quarter, driven by the Steelcase acquisition, operational productivity gains and organic revenue growth."

That promise rests heavily on the Steelcase acquisition — a transaction the headline 133% growth rate itself reflects. Strip out acquisition-driven revenue, and the underlying organic pace is far harder to verify from these figures alone; the company did not break it out here.

How fast is HNI actually growing?

The five-year record is strong. HNI compounded revenue at 19.9% annually over that span, on trailing twelve-month revenue of $5.30 billion — a scale that places it among the larger business services companies.

The two-year view shows acceleration: annualized revenue growth of 43.8%, above the five-year trend, indicating demand strengthened recently. This quarter's 133% print confirms the pattern, though acquisition accounting, not end-market demand, explains much of the latest jump.

The forward curve bends down. Sell-side analysts, per S&P, expect revenue to grow 17% over the next 12 months — a clear deceleration from the two-year rate, even if the level remains healthy.

What happened to margins?

The five-year direction is favorable: adjusted operating margin improved by 2.1 percentage points over the period, as revenue growth delivered operating leverage. The average level, however, was 7.9% — weak for a business services company, held back by a large cost base.

This quarter moved against the trend. Adjusted operating margin of 8.9% contracted 2.4 percentage points year on year, meaning expenses grew faster than revenue. For a company banking on "operational productivity gains," that is the number to watch next quarter.

What does the EPS beat hide?

Adjusted EPS of $1.62 rose from $1.10 a year earlier. Five-year EPS compounded at 17% annually — solid, but below the 19.9% revenue growth rate, a gap the analysis attributes to interest and taxes rather than operations.

The larger issue sits in the share count. HNI diluted shareholders by 63.7% over five years, which offset operational efficiency gains and suppressed per-share earnings. Two-year annual EPS growth of 13.2% already lags the five-year trend.

Wall Street expects full-year EPS to grow 11%, from $4.06 to $4.51, over the next twelve months, according to S&P.

The takeaway

HNI beat on profit, missed narrowly on revenue, and shrank both operating and cash flow margins while printing headline triple-digit growth. A good quarter is one data point, not a verdict; the fourth quarter must show the promised productivity gains before the dilution and margin questions close.
