Pan Ocean posted 197.4 billion won ($147.4 million) in third-quarter operating profit, up 57.7% year over year and its strongest quarterly result since Q3 2022. Revenue reached 2.0973 trillion won ($1.6 billion), a 65.2% increase from a year earlier, the company said on November 2.

The quarter extended a streak of three consecutive profit increases this year. Sequentially, revenue grew 9.6% and operating profit 1.9%.

How fast has the recovery run?

Cumulative figures for the first nine months came to 5.5199 trillion won ($4.1 billion) in revenue and 532 billion won ($397.3 million) in operating profit. That total already exceeds last year's full-year results — a notably swift recovery even by the standards of listed shipping companies.

Which segments drove the gain?

Improvement was spread across every major business line:

  • Dry Bulk: operating profit of 100.6 billion won ($75.1 million), up 82.6% year over year, on expanded steel exports and rising coal transport demand — despite typhoons and transit restrictions at the Suez and Panama canals that reduced effective fleet capacity.
  • Tanker: 34.8 billion won ($26.0 million), up 71.4%, helped by delivery of very large crude carriers (VLCCs, the largest crude oil tankers afloat) deployed under a long-term transport contract with SK Energy, plus improving market conditions for medium-range (MR) product tankers.
  • LNG Transport: 43.6 billion won ($32.6 million), up 7.6%, on stable earnings from long-term contracts.
  • Container Ship: 17.5 billion won ($13.1 million), up 134.8% — the steepest growth rate among the segments — driven by reduced fleet supply from congestion at China's Shanghai and Ningbo ports and higher cargo volume ahead of China's National Day holiday.

What comes next?

The results demonstrate that strength in global bulk freight rates feeds directly into shipping companies' bottom lines. With short-term supply shortages deepening because of canal transit disruptions and seasonal factors, freight-rate levels and the pace of fleet supply recovery are expected to determine fourth-quarter earnings.

Given the high volatility of the bulk market, the share of long-term transport contracts and the buffering role of non-bulk segments such as LNG and tankers are seen as key to stability.

A Pan Ocean official said: "We will enhance our responsiveness to market changes, including by expanding our business portfolio, and continue strengthening fleet competitiveness and our ESG management foundation to secure stable profitability." The official added: "We will steadily raise corporate value through investments for future growth and active shareholder returns."

The company said it plans to sustain its profitability base through business diversification and a stronger fleet.

The verdict, for the finance desk: four segments, four gains, and a nine-month haul that has already buried last year's totals. The question for Q4 is whether canal disruptions keep supply tight enough to hold the line.
